Renato Bezerra de Mello

I began my activity as an art worker (a term coined by Cildo Meireles) in 2000, after sixteen years dedicated to architecture and to restoring items deemed to be of cultural heritage. The turning point was instigated by my participation in an exchange program between the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, in Rio de Janeiro, and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts, in Paris. I decided that, as I had done in architecture, I would work on questions of memory and the tension between remembrance and forgetting.

In 2002, I took part in a Parisian group show in which I presented an installation that conjoined family and collective memory by rescuing old castoff photographs from closets and drawers as well as a small, colored popular plastic object that served for viewing those images, reproduced as black and white slides. Beyond people’s memories, though, what interested me in that early work were the things around people falling ever more quickly into disuse.

As my artistic investigation continued, I made use of family letters and sheets of carbon paper upon which I wrote and drew tirelessly; I took up embroidery, using discontinued fabrics and threads; I destroyed silk threads, transforming them into near dust out of which I later made tiny colored balls; I broke a collection of crystal glasses and goblets collected over twenty years; I sanded down small cubes of chalk in order to recreate a collection of marbles lost during childhood; and I invented a diary of post cards that I mailed to myself over many years.

Recently, on the occasion of an exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, the city in which I currently live and work, I received the following message from a friend: you are an artist who paves a daily direction towards the idea of art as a process of knowing, along with its twisting path. I’ve been thinking a lot about that, with a special esteem for the twisting path.
